Basil Labels
At Basil Labels we supply laser engraved stainless steel Plant Labels, which should provide a life time of service. They are not just marked, but actually Laser cut into the surface, and cannot be erased without resorting to extreme abuse. We have produced a neutral matt finish, not to distract from your plants.You are able to customise each label to your requirements with a serif or a Sans Serif font, with or without Italics. There are two lines per side which provides you with 100 characters (25 per line). This gives a 5mm font height per line.

Our standard plant labels are 17mm wide, 135mm long and 1mm thick. They are made of 316L stainless steel which is a Marine grade, resistant to corrosion even in a high salt environment. These Plant Labels have been extensively tested to provide a quality product. Our testing shows that currently, the labels can ONLY be damaged by full submersion into wet fertiliser or Cola. Even in these instances it took approximately a week for this to happen.
We supply holders which are specifically designed for these plant labels. The holders are firmly affixed to the labels and inserted into the ground.
Mounting accessories such as, stainless steel cable ties and screws are also available to secure your labels.
As well as our standard everlasting Stainless Steel plant labels we now do CUSTOM ENGRAVING. Lasers can be used on a multitude of other materials with almost unlimited Graphics and Text applied.

Sustainability
We endeavour to make our business sustainable. Most of our equipment is restored and reused. Our office is made from reclaimed timber, built on piles for a more efficient use of materials. We do our best to give a second life to a majority of our equipment and this in no way hinders our ability to provide quality products.The labels are delivered with our own packaging that can be composted.
If you no longer require your labels please return them to us and if suitable will offer them free to others with their orders.
We endeavour to remove from our business any non reuse-able Plastics.
Security
At Basil Labels, we take the security of our customers’ information seriously. We uphold your privacy standards by storing all data on our servers locally.And have good web security with 'Padlock-always-on' and 'Site Scanner' features.
Why Labels?
In January 2015 my wife, Jo and I attended a British Pteridological Society meeting, where the subject of how to label your plant collection was once again brought up. As usual, no one had arrived at a conclusion and this had us talking on the way home. How difficult could it be to create a durable, long lasting and efficient way of labelling your plants?
To produce the best results, we asked ourselves: ‘What is the function of a label?’
- To clearly display information about a plant
- To present the information on a durable material
- Providing extended use without regular maintenance
- To be practical and user friendly at a fair price
- To be secure, not easily lost or misplaced
Keeping these points in mind, we set about trialling a range of materials, however they were all found to be lacking in some way.
We considered casting, punching and scribing the labels, however they did not have the functionality we required. Ceramic labels were a step closer, however they too had failings.
First Prototypes
We settled on laser engraved, stainless steel, but now faced the problem of producing the labels at a reasonable price with easy ordering.
Working with my son, Simon we developed the labels further and conducted a series of tests to demonstrate durability. The label spent a month in the dish washer being washed twice a day, and was then sanded down. The end result exhibited a durable product with limited damage and still clearly legible.
Securing
Our next obstacle was securing the labels from your garden pests. This included: Birds, Cats, Dogs, Foxes, Badgers and large two legged Mammals.
Once we were satisfied with the product, many trials were conducted with potential users. Their feedback was used to further improve the label.

About Ashley Basil
I remember my interest first started when I dug my first potato patch with a fork taller than me! The ground was a matt of couch grass, and I was so disappointed when 7 bits came up. Finally, the harvest and it was a proud moment when my Mother did not have to buy any potatoes until the spring. From that day Horticulture became a passion of mine. After graduating from Writtle College, I went into landscaping for a number of years and then into the growing industry. As a part of a rapidly expanding business, I became involved in the construction and maintenance of nurseries.
I have had a lifelong interest in wildlife, and recently became involved in the control of invasive species. I assist in running volunteer work parties along the Lymington River in the New Forest to help remove Himalayan Balsam.
My wife Jo has a keen interest in Ferns and has been a member of The British Pteridological Society BPS ( The Fern Society ) since her days at College.
With over 30 years of experience in the horticultural industry and the support of my wife, I took the plunge and started my own business; Ashley Basil Horticultural Services (ABHS).

Custom Metal - credit card sized labels
We were asked by Kevin Hughes of Cally Gardens to develop an everlasting Stainless Steel plant Bed label. Most bed labels are about 3 by 4 inches, which can be intrusive, a credit card 3.5 by 2.0 inches can give a large font and have space for plenty of other information. We can also include Logos or QR codes.The rear of the of the label can be use for management - maybe its just an Accession number or Bar Codes, but it has many other uses.
The addition of QR codes can be a very useful tool for linking to further information, and is a much more powerful tool of management. A standard Smart Phone will read and process these 2D bar codes, with a simple App. The code could be linked to a data base so that information can be updated or work schedules amended. Also if linked to mapping Geographic Information System (GIS) it can be used to track plants within a garden. Our standard label holder works with this.
Custom Clay - Flower pots and Plant bed labelling Tiles
Another project was to produce a bed number Clay Tile that was large, cheap, simple and unobtrusive.The Fibre Laser we use works well with metals - clay is manly Aluminium so will it mark? Yes! The result is clean and clear. It can be used for a wide variety of patterns and graphics, not just Text labels.
Promotional products are just a start; QR code can again be used; logos and other branding. How about a message on a brick!? This could be used for outreach, education, and interpretation.
Acrylic - Lit artwork
These have the advantage of an attractive appearance, making the pieces highly suited to Education, Outreach and Evergreen/Perpetual Reminders.Lots of interest in the life cycle of ferns and botanical artwork. Line drawings work very well with the Laser engraving and edge lighting (optional).
The lighting is powered by USB so keep those old phone chargers, or we can supply suitable type.
Wood, Leaves, leather and Any Ideas - Let me know
We like trying new things so if you have some new ideas please get in contact.Marking leaves was a fun idea, but some how it doesn't seem right! Wood objects and surfaces are easy to do, and look very nice.
We were asked by a botanic garden to produce 30 sets of fobs for their education work with children, they requested that they were on wood, light and easy to clean, working with them we produced sets of 5 Nature Word Search. And these rugged pieces tuned out to be very popular and have been in constant use all summer.
For an Aeronautical company, Foreign Object Damage (FOD) was a big worry, so we were asked to mark a set of tools used by an aircraft engineer, coded traceability is a high priority! Sadly its not working with the kids, as they keep nicking my tools.
We can colour mark Titanium. We have not found a use for it yet, but I know one lucky person who has not thrown out this birthday card.

The labels are 17mm wide, 135mm long and 1mm thick. They are made of 316L stainless steel which is a Marine grade, corrosion resistant material - even in a high salt environment.
The labels are delivered by First Class Royal Mail large letter, in our own packaging. The packaging can be composted.

“Credit Card Label” Custom Text Stainless Steel Label
Ideal for Plants, Trees, Fruit or as a Memorial plaque.Made of marine grade Stainless steel, 316L, laser Engraved, practically indestructible.
Size 87mm 3 1/2" by 54mm 2 1/4" with one hole.
Each label with up to 6 lines of text 25 letters per line (inc spaces), in a serif or San-serif typeface, with or with out italics. Do you want it centre or left justified?
Typically if required, the Logo is on the first 2 lines, and the remaining text lines are full width, see photo. An interactive design service is available by email, at extra cost for more complex layouts.

Stainless Label Holders
The label holders are designed to clip to the labels, making it difficult for them to be removed. The end loop helps secure the label into the ground.The holders are also made of 304 stainless steel which like the label is corrosion resistant, hardened and durable.
They are delivered separately from the labels.

Stainless Label Ties
The label ties can be used to hold the label to stakes or fencing. It can also be buried into the compost making it more difficult for the label to be removed as it acts as an anchor.Do not use these ties to directly attach to plants, they will cause strangulation.
They are delivered with the labels.

Stainless Screws
The screws are no.6 x ¾ inch crosshead, made from 316 stainless steel and are self-tapping. They also include a 2.5mm pilot drill.
